Trip planning information for ICCC 2023 in Waterloo, Ontario

  • Excursion to Niagara Falls on Friday, June 23
    • After the excursion to Niagara Falls on Friday, June 23, the bus can either drop you off at Toronto Pearson Airport or back at the University of Waterloo campus.
    • For Pearson Airport drop-off: Drop-off time would be approximately 6:30 PM, which might work well if you have a late evening flight on Friday; there are also many airport hotels if your departure is on Saturday.  The airport is a also pretty good location to stay at if you want to take a bit of time in Toronto before returning home, as the UP Express train runs directly from the airport to downtown Toronto.  The weekend after ICCC is Pride Weekend in Toronto, and the very large parade is on Sunday, June 25.  Downtown hotels fill up quickly for Pride Weekend.
    • Staying on in Waterloo makes sense in particular if you want to visit the Stratford Festival on the weekend, which is around a 35-minute drive west of Waterloo.
    • The closest and most affordable places to stay are in the UW residences.
    • The nicest nearby hotel is the Delta hotel, which will also host the conference reception on Tuesday evening after the first keynote speech.  The Delta also has discounted rooms until May 19.  The Delta is around a 30-minute walk from the conference venue, across the main park in Waterloo.
    • The nearest large airport is Toronto Pearson (YYZ).  To get from YYZ to Waterloo, follow the directions here.
    • There also are inexpensive flights from Europe to Hamilton (YHM), which is around an hour’s drive to Waterloo (https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/hamilton/flight-hamilton-amsterdam-airport-1.6794405); it’s not easy to get between Hamilton and Waterloo by transit.
    • You can also fly from some Canadian cities to Kitchener-Waterloo (YKF); taxis from that airport to UW are around $25.
    • There’s lots to do in the Kitchener-Waterloo area! It might be handy to rent a car, especially if you want to explore the countryside around Waterloo.
