Conveniently positioned about <strong data-start=\"683\" data-end=\"708\">130 km south of Porto<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"713\" data-end=\"739\" data-is-only-node=\"\">200 km north of Lisbon<\/strong>, with easy access by major railway lines, Coimbra once served as <strong data-start=\"805\" data-end=\"827\">Portugal\u2019s capital<\/strong> during the early Middle Ages. The <strong data-start=\"1265\" data-end=\"1289\">Roman cryptoporticus<\/strong>, preserved beneath the former Bishop\u2019s Palace \u2014 now the <strong data-start=\"1346\" data-end=\"1383\">National Museum Machado de Castro<\/strong> \u2014 offers a glimpse into its ancient origins.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1432\" data-end=\"2001\">Following the fall of the Roman Empire, the city saw successive waves of <strong data-start=\"1505\" data-end=\"1516\">Vandals<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"1518\" data-end=\"1527\">Suevi<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"1529\" data-end=\"1538\">Alans<\/strong>, and <strong data-start=\"1544\" data-end=\"1557\">Visigoths<\/strong>, each shaping its evolving character. The <strong data-start=\"1755\" data-end=\"1783\">final Reconquest in 1064<\/strong>, led by <strong data-start=\"1792\" data-end=\"1815\">Ferdinand the Great<\/strong>, transformed Coimbra into a strategic meeting point between the <strong data-start=\"1880\" data-end=\"1896\">Muslim south<\/strong> and the <strong data-start=\"1905\" data-end=\"1924\">Christian north<\/strong>, fostering a <strong data-start=\"1938\" data-end=\"1970\">thriving Mozarabic community<\/strong> and a rich cultural synthesis.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1432\" data-end=\"2001\">From <strong data-start=\"1073\" data-end=\"1092\">1139 until 1260<\/strong>, Coimbra served as the <strong data-start=\"1116\" data-end=\"1139\">capital of Portugal<\/strong>, a period that saw the birth of six medieval kings. In <strong data-start=\"1351\" data-end=\"1359\">1290<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"1361\" data-end=\"1392\">Portugal\u2019s first university<\/strong> was founded in Lisbon and later transferred permanently to Coimbra in <strong data-start=\"1463\" data-end=\"1471\">1537<\/strong>, becoming the renowned <strong data-start=\"1495\" data-end=\"1522\">Universidade de Coimbra<\/strong>. Over the centuries, it has <strong data-start=\"2805\" data-end=\"2883\">absorbed and reflected the cultural, artistic, and intellectual influences<\/strong> of the <strong data-start=\"2891\"
