Social Program

The social program is still being developed, so stay tuned for more details!

Welcome reception with an ambience

After the conference’s kick-off on Tuesday, we invite all participants to join the conference’s welcome reception. Honouring Swedish summer traditions, participants will enjoy a Swedish celebration classic: Smörgåstårta och bubbel!

To set the mood, Martin Lindh, a local electro-musician will play live music accompanied by a set of generative visual elements.

Martin Lindh creates experimental electronic music blending digital technology with analogue electronic equipment. Following a tradition of ambient music going back to Brian Eno and the field recordings of Chris Watson, sometimes also infusing the sonic landscape with beats and rhythms of minimal techno. Concepts such as liminal spaces, obsolete technology and forgotten media are recurring themes in his music.

An afternoon in Gränna – The candy capital of Sweden!

Before we head to our conference dinner, we take the time to do some local sightseeing by heading to the candy capital of Sweden: the idyllic town of Gränna!

Gränna is a famous tourist town at the edge of the large lake Vättern with rows of pastel-coloured wooden houses that take you back in time. The town is most famous for its production of Polkagrisar (polka pigs), a hard candy traditionally made with red and white stripes and tasting of an intense peppermint. Pop into any of the many candy manufacturing bakeries during your time here and enjoy the beautiful scenery!

Before you are free to roam the city a bit, we have planned a few social activities for you to enjoy. However, not everyone loves the same thing and so we have chosen to limit the number of participants per activity – see below.

When registering, please indicate your preference and we will do our best to ensure that your social activity is to your liking!

Make your own Polkagris Candy!

ca 2 hours (20 people limit)

If you had enough of city sightseeing and rather indulge your sweet tooth, you have the chance to put on an apron and join the local candy-baking experts in a 2 hour workshop learning how to make Gränna–style candy canes by tuning your skills at bending and twisting candy paste!

Note: this option is planned for a full 2 hours which means that it greatly reduces the time you have to explore the city of Gränna.

Locally-Brewed Beer Tasting

ca 1.5 hours (40 people limit)

For the thirsty ones, the touring bus will not stop in Gränna but take you an additional few minutes further into the countryside to Brunnsbryggeriet. Brunnsbryggeriet is a small-scale beer brewery located at one of the small lakes in the nearby area. Together with the beer-brewing crowed, you will have the opportunity to try a few different types of beers and get a small introduction to beer making.

After the beer tasting is finished, the bus takes you back to Gränna for a quick opportunity to check out the city before we head to the dinner venue.

Culture, the City and the Polar Express at Gränna museum

until departure

If you need a relaxing break and to explore a bit of culture, we encourage you to take the opportunity to roam the city on your own accord. People choosing this option will be given a ticket to the Gränna museum (closes at 17.00) to learn about the mad group of exploring pioneers who decided to do an expedition to the North Pole in a hot air balloon (!!!).

This option also allows you to check out the Gränna waterfront (if you want to go for a swim), watch the experts make candy in one of the many candy bakeries or simply grab a relaxing moment before the conference dinner starts.

Guided Nature Walk: Swedish Legends and Fairytales

ca 1 hours

Nothing is quite as stereotypical as Swedish nature. Thus, we invite you to join us to work up an appetite by taking a forest hike up to the viewing point on the Gränna hills! During the hike, you will learn about Swedish midsummer traditions, some stories from Tomtar och Troll (Gnomes and Trolls) and a few fairytale legends that shaped the Swedish mindset for generations.

After the hike, we return to Gränna city for a moment to do some free sightseeing and candy shopping.

After the social activity, we will head to the conference dinner venue.

Conference dinner

The conference dinner will take place at the Gyllene Uttern. Built to resemble a medieval castle – shiny armours included, the county hotel was built in the early 1930s is since then a popular tourist destination. Perfectly located on the hills overlooking Lake Vättern, the restaurant at Gyllene Uttern provides some of the most spectacular views of the lake and – if we are lucky – the slow and spectacular Swedish summer sunset!

Nothing is quite like the feasts at Swedish Midsummer! Honouring this most magical time of the year, the ICCC’24 conference dinner consists of a traditional Swedish Midsummer buffé with an accompanying dessert table.
