This is also apparent in the surge of interest in Design Fiction during the last 10 years (Bleecker 2009, Tanenbaum et al. 2013, Dunne and Raby 2013) both within and outside the CC community. Design Fictions have traditionally emphasised near-future developments, implications and consequences, but what about developments that lie one or several decades into the future? With the aim to discuss how computational creativity will affect and change society decades from now, we will organize an ICCC workshop on the theme “Ethics, Sustainability, and Creative-AI Futures”. What will be the long-term consequences of AI and computational creativity 15 years from now - in 2038?

Knowledge relates to the ways in which we make decisions and act, based on our experiences, previous knowledge and reasoning. As a critical lens on computing, it includes both questions on our epistemologies (i.e. ways of knowing) and our ontologies (i.e. what is and can be). For instance, autonomous computational creativity suggests attributing creative agency to non-humans, whereas creativity support systems (CSTs) aim to focus on supporting the creative endeavors of the human. The approaches to ethically and sustainably oriented design of these systems will require the development of new types of knowledge; new theories, methods, ethical guidelines and practices within the research community. This workshop will explore these themes - through drafting speculative fictional abstracts.

This design fiction workshop will utilize Fictional Abstracts (Baumer et al 2014, Penzenstadler 2014, Blythe 2014) - fictive abstract from research papers that are yet to be written - to encourage researchers to take ethical and societal implications of their and others’ research into consideration. We argue that some research questions (including those that address researchers’ fears, uncertainty and doubt) systematically - and for systemic reasons - remain absent from research papers and research grant applications. Fictional Abstracts allow writers and readers to shift their attention from the incremental developments of today’s technological capabilities to also consider what the realization of these technologies can imply. This workshop is future-oriented and will provide a long-term benefit for the CC community through its critical reflection on how we move forward in the development of Creative-AI technologies in a responsible way. In understanding where we see ourselves in 2038, we can begin to work towards particular conceptualisations. We will document the imagined research of the future and will through this highlight the role of CC in the making of alternative futures. We can begin to unpack the immediate and imagined ethical issues in our work, and we expect researchers to engage deeply with the challenges of their own research and our field.-->

Description: There has been an increasing interest in discussing implications of technologies for computational creativity in terms of ethics and sustainability. This workshop brings such questions into focus in the specific context of Creative-AI systems by exploring questions of ethics and sustainability through the use of Fictional Abstracts. We use Fictional Abstracts to cast forward 15 years to 2038 to imagine the future of Creative-AI, and reflect on how we got there. By writing Fictional Abstracts – abstracts of research papers yet to be written – we will unpick critical tensions in the advancement of computational creativity over the next decades. The workshop invites participants to develop perspectives and sensitivities on the futures of AI-enabled computational creativity and to critically reflect on the assumptions, methods, and tools for enabling (and disabling) such futures, with a particular focus on questions of ethics and sustainability.

Selected Workshop Participants and Abstracts

Matthew Peachey, Human Created: Exploring the Effects of Strict Government Policy for Training Generative Machine Learning Systems

Mohamad Elzohbi, SpeakCode: Bridging the Gap between Natural Language and CodeGeneration

Yuxuan Huang, Humans Will Lose Proper Imagination Unconsciously

Hugh Xuechen LIU, Exploring the Use of Non-Fungible Tokens to Protect Copyright in AI-Generated Content: Benefits, Concerns, and Guidelines

Carolyn Lamb, ArtCAPTCHA: A Turing test for human visual artists

Kristofer Jovkovski (online participation), AI paradigm shift and the consequences of replacing the human agent with an AI decision making agent

Participating

Prospective workshop participants will each submit a Fictional Abstract. Furthermore, the workshop participants will also explore the usefulness of using Fictional Abstracts to explore issues around critical futures, and discuss in which settings this methodology could be beneficial. We want to reach a broad range of researchers interested in the future of Creative-AI including but not limited to (CC) authors working with AI.
