Travel Information

You can arrive in (and depart from) Madrid either by air, by train, by bus or by car.

By air

All flights arrive at Madrid-Barajas International airport (Terminals 1 and 2 are for international flights).

How to get to the city centre from the airport ...
... by underground

The access to the underground (Barajas station, line no. 8) is located in Terminal 2 in the connecting corridor to parking area number 2, right in the middle of the terminal. Look for a red diamond with the word "Metro" in white!

From line no. 8 (the pink one) you can go to:

  • Mar de Cristal station, where you can take line no. 4 (the brown one) which provides a fast route into the centre of Madrid.
  • Nuevos Ministerios station (the end of line no. 8), which is in the heart of Madrid's financial district (journey time: 12 minutes). In Nuevos Ministerios station you can connect with lines no. 6 (the grey one) and 10 (the dark blue one). Baggage Check-in desks are also available in Nuevos Ministerios station.

Underground trains run daily from 6:00 am to 1:30 am.

Fares: Tickets for a single journey (no distance & no time limits, any day of the week) cost 1 EUR. You can also buy a "Metrobus" ticket, valid for 10 rides (on the underground and/or city buses; not for the buses to the airport) which costs 6.70 EUR. One Metrobus ticket can be used by several travelers at the same time, as long as you validate it as many times as the number of people traveling together. Single and Metrobus tickets can be bought at any underground station (at the ticket office desk or at ticket machines).

... by bus
Following this link you can find information about buses from the airport to city center. Bus service starts in Madrid at 6.00am and ends at 11.30pm. From 0.00am to 5.30am there are also public buses, but the lines are different. Fares are the same as Metro ones, and "MetroBus" tickets are valid for buses and Metro. For a single travel in bus, the fare is 1 euro, no matter the distance you travel, and you must purchase it inside the bus, asking the driver for a single ("billete sencillo").
... by taxi

Taxis from the airport to the centre of Madrid cost about 20 EUR (including airport supplements: 4 EUR) and the journey takes 25-30 minutes, depending on traffic.

Official taxi stands are located outside each Terminal Arrival area.

Make sure you take a taxi from the official stand and not from someone offering taxis inside the terminal. You should not accept offers from taxi drivers inside the terminals as there are frequent reports of passengers being ripped off!
